What is Coronavirus?
The word corona is Latin for crown. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a family of RNA (ribonucleic acid) viruses. They are called coronaviruses because the virus particle exhibits a characteristic ‘corona’ (halo or crown) of spike proteins around its lipid envelope. CoV infections are common in animals and humans.
What is COVID-19?
There is a slight confusion between using coronavirus and covid-19. Coronavirus is a type of virus rather than a disease itself. WHO has named the new disease
COVID-19 (for coronavirus disease 2019)
1. The novel coronavirus is officially named SARS-CoV-2.
The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 is officially named COVID-19.
How does the coronavirus spread?
WHO says the virus can move from person to person via:
- Respiratory droplets: when a person sneezes or coughs.
- Direct contact with infected individuals.
- Contact with contaminated surfaces and objects.
What are the common COVID-19 Symptoms?
On Jan. 24, prestigious medical journal The Lancet published an extensive analysis of the clinical features of the disease. According to the report, the COVID-19 patients present with:
Fever, elevated body temperature
Fatigue or muscle pain
Less common symptoms include:
Coughing up mucus or blood
What is the most common safety/precautionary measures we can take to avoid the coronavirus?
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 to 30 seconds
- If soap and water is not available then use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol and wait until your hand dries
- Don’t touch your mouth, nose and eyes with unclean hands
- Dispose used tissue, handkerchief and mask into closed bins
- Cover your nose and mouth with tissue/handkerchief/bent elbow while sneezing or coughing
- Avoid mass gathering and crowded places
Does Covid-19 spread through food especially eating chicken, eggs, and meat?
There is no conclusive evidence that the properly cooked food transmits the disease.
Does covid-19 can spread through pets?
The transmission of disease has not been seen through pets.
Does the dead body of a person infected with Coronavirus transmit the infection?
There is no transmission of Coronavirus infection from the dead body of the person.
Can the Coronavirus survive in hot & humid places?
From the evidences so far, this virus can be transmitted in ALL AREAS including hot and humid climates.
Can taking a hot bath prevent the new coronavirus disease?
It won’t. Taking a hot bath frequently with extremely hot water can be harmful. It also can reduce/lower your immune system.
Can it be transmitted through mosquito bites?
To date, there is no information nor evidence to that myth. The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose.
Are hand dryers effective in killing the new coronavirus?
No. Hand dryers are not effective in killing the 2019-nCoV. Once your hands are cleaned, you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or a warm air dryer.
Can an ultraviolet disinfection lamp kill the new coronavirus?
UV lamps should not be used to sterilize hands or other areas of skin as UV radiation can cause skin irritation.
Can vaccines against pneumonia protect you against the new coronavirus?
No. Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine, do not protect against the new coronavirus. The virus is so new and different that it needs its vaccine.
Can regularly rinsing your nose with saline help prevent infection with the new coronavirus?
No. No evidence regularly rinsing the nose with saline has protected people from infection with the new coronavirus.
Can eating garlic help prevent infection with the new coronavirus?
Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, no evidence from the current outbreak eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus.
Does the new coronavirus affects older people only?
People of all ages can be infected by the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the virus, for example by following good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene.
Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the new coronavirus?
No, antibiotics do not work against viruses,they only work against bacteria.
Is there any Japanese/foreign medicine to prevent or treat the new coronavirus?
To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
